WhatsApp automation for Pakistani businesses: a practical guide

In Pakistan, WhatsApp is not a marketing channel. It is where the business happens. Orders arrive there, complaints arrive there, and if you do not reply within the hour the customer has usually gone somewhere that did.

Business app or Business API

These are different products and choosing wrong costs you months.

  • WhatsApp Business app. Free, runs on one phone, gives you a catalogue, quick replies and away messages. Fine up to a few dozen conversations a day handled by one person.
  • WhatsApp Business API. No phone required, multiple agents, proper automation, integration with your CRM and website. This is what you need once conversations outgrow one person, and it is what any real automation runs on.

The API is accessed through a provider rather than directly. You pay per conversation, in tiers, with service conversations cheaper than marketing ones.

What you are allowed to send

This is where most projects go wrong. You cannot simply broadcast whatever you like.

Outside a 24 hour window from the customer's last message, you can only send pre approved message templates. Templates are submitted for review and can be rejected. Inside the 24 hour window you can send freely.

Practically, this means your automation has to be built around that window. Design flows that give the customer a reason to reply early, because their reply is what opens the door.

The four flows worth building first

  • Order and booking confirmation. Instant, automatic, with the details repeated back. Cuts a large share of "did my order go through" messages.
  • Appointment reminders. For clinics and salons this pays for the whole project on its own. A reminder 24 hours out and again 2 hours out measurably reduces no shows.
  • Payment follow up. Polite, scheduled, automatic. Most late payments are forgotten rather than refused.
  • FAQ deflection. Opening hours, location, price list, delivery time. The same eight questions, answered instantly, freeing your team for the ones that need a person.

Where the handoff belongs

Every automated flow needs an obvious exit to a human. Not buried, not after four failed attempts. The fastest way to lose a customer is to trap them in a loop with a bot that cannot help.

Our rule: if the bot does not recognise the intent twice, it hands over and says so plainly. And the human receives the full conversation, so the customer never repeats themselves.

What it costs

Provider fees plus per conversation charges, both modest at SME volumes. The build is the larger number and it is one time. For a clinic or a restaurant, the reminder flow alone usually covers it within a couple of months.
